The Highlanders Museum is sited in the spectacular 18th century artillery fortification of Fort George, which was built after Culloden to overawe the Northern Highlands and deter further Jacobite uprising. The Regiment has had close associations with Fort George for over 200 years. The Regimental Museum collection includes treasures which will appeal to visitors of all ages. Arranged in chronological sequence, it tells the stories of the antecedent regiments through displays of medals, uniforms, paintings and prints, colours and piper banners, plate, weapons and trophies from the 18th century to the present day. The displays are colourful, well labelled and avoid gadgetry so that visitors may enjoy them without distraction. This superb collection is unique in sharing a barracks with a Regular infantry battalion. The visitor can compare the life of the modern soldier with military tradition dating back over 200 years as displayed in this long established and popular museum. The museum also has a good collection of books, photographs and archive materials which researchers are welcome to use by appointment. The museum incorporates the collections of the Seaforth Highlanders, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders and Lovat Scouts.
