Friday 2nd May marks the beginning of the four day museums and galleries events weekend, Show Scotland 2008. Visitors to venues hosting Show Scotland events can expect the unexpected with one-off events including late night openings, fun family activities and live arts performances taking place right through the bank holiday weekend.
The BAFTA awarding winning actress, Daniela Nardini, is backing Show Scotland 2008 and this week she paid a visit to the Scottish Mining Museum to see St David's Brass Band rehearse for one of the museum’s Deeply Scottish Show Scotland events. On Friday 2nd May their Deeply Scottish Folk Night will be a fantastic evening of music with a coal-community theme, all set in the spectacular surroundings of the Lady Victoria Colliery.
Speaking at the Scottish Mining Museum, Daniela Nardini said:
“I am delighted to support Show Scotland 2008 as I think museums and galleries bring so much pleasure to peoples lives, young or old. This big events weekend is such a great idea as with so many great events happening there is something to suit all tastes and some make for a really great family day out. The real bonus is that adults will enjoy Show Scotland events as much as the children!”
Co-ordinated by Museums Galleries Scotland, Show Scotland is an annual museums and galleries events weekend when their doors open to a wonderful variety of creative events in unusual venues. Events this year include the live Gig at GoMA which will convert a daytime museum into a late-night venue, reality TV inspired events at Aberdeen Art Gallery including The Art Factor and Art Idol Victorian fun in Stromness, a day of Japanese event at Perth Museum and Art Gallery, evening entertainment at Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, adventurous family storytelling at the National Library of Scotland and Scottish Opera giving a one-off performance at the Museum of Transport.
Joanne Orr, CEO of Scottish Museums Council, said:
“Show Scotland is all about creative and unusual events designed to help visitors explore and see museum and gallery collections in new ways. Although only in its third year now, the ‘big events weekend’ has already become a highlight in Scotland’s cultural calendar. It’s fantastic to see Show Scotland events taking place all across the country showcasing Scotland’s unique heritage and cultural wealth in new and imaginative ways.”
