Dumfries Museum & Camera Obscura
Set in an eighteenth century windmill, the Dumfries Museum offers an interesting journey of the region’s history. Explore the natural and local history of Dumfries & Galloway, including the wildlife of the Solway salt marshes, fossil footprints left by prehistoric reptiles and the weapons and tools of the region’s earliest inhabitants.
The Camera Obscura, based on the top level of the tower, was installed in 1836 and is the oldest working instrument of its type in the world. It provides a complete 360 degree, panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. For its protection, it is only open to visitors in the summer months and on clear, dry days.
There are fun activities to join in with and a gift shop selling unusual and nostalgic toys.
