National Mining Museum

The museum is based at one of the finest surviving examples of a Victorian colliery in Europe and visitors get the chance to experience the sheer size of a colliery, be amazed by the engineering brilliance behind the machinery and retrace the steps of the miners.

Take a guided tour with guides who are all ex-miners and experience the noise and atmosphere of a working pit with personal insights and anecdotes. Learn the story of coal’s creation in the Carboniferous period 360 million years ago. Follow human’s efforts to extract it from the earth, from the thirteenth century to modern times.
