The Michael Bruce Cottage Museum
The museum is dedicated to the memory of Michael Bruce (1746-1767), also known as the ‘Gentle Poet of Lochleven’. The great-nephew of the poet, Robert Bruce rescued the birthplace of Michael Bruce from ruin. In 1905 a Trust was set up to look after the building and to keep his memory alive. In 1906, the Cottage was opened as a museum and retains many of its original features, including old fireplaces and traditional double doors.
It houses a collection of manuscripts and various editions of the poet’s work. The cottage contains a great collection of old photographs and watercolours of local landscapes. Also on display is an oval oil painting of a lady by an unknown artist, which probably dates from the eighteenth century.
