Registration
The Museum Registration Scheme was established in 1988 by the Museum & Galleries Commission and is now run by Resource. It is a voluntary scheme which assesses a museum's performance against a set of minimum professional standards. The scheme covers key museum functions such as documentation, collections care, and acquisition and disposal as well as assessing the legal status and management of the museum. The scheme has been adopted as a baseline by many funding bodies and has resulted in an ongoing rise in professional standards in UK museums since its inception. A revised Registration Scheme is currently under development and is due to be launched early in 2004.

Correcting damage and stabilising condition through interventive action / treatment work on museum objects.
revenue expenditure
Payment for goods and services. Pressure on local authority finances has meant that revenue funding for local authority museums and local authority grant-aided independent museums has been in decline. SMC recommends that securing a realistic and sustainable revenue funding base for museum services should be a key objective of a national strategy for museums.
(For comparison, see capital expenditure.)
ring fencing
Ear-marking funding for specific purposes.
