Curatorial Advisers

Curatorial Advisers played an extremely important role throughout Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Registration scheme, and will continue to do so under the new Accreditation Scheme. There are around 50 Curatorial Adviser in Scotland advising around 80 independent museums.

A Curatorial Adviser must be appointed by any museum that does not employ a professional curator.  This appointment is necessary for such a museum to meet the Accreditation standard.

The information on the following pages explains the procedures and relationship between a Curatorial Adviser and the museum they are advising. This guidance applies to both the new Accreditation scheme and Phase 2 of the Registration scheme.

If you have any enquiries about the information on these pages or require more detailed information on the Museum Accreditation Scheme then please contact the SMC Standards Manager.
