Appropriate access to professional advice on key aspects of museum work is a requirement for all museums applying for Accredited status. Maintaining this professional input is essential to retaining Accredited or Registered status. Where a member of staff does not provide this internally, then the museum must formally (by a minute of the governing body) appoint a suitably qualified professional Curatorial Adviser.
Qualifications required
Curatorial Advisers must have a relevant degree, or a diploma in museum studies (or equivalent), AND recent relevant experience of the principles and practice of museum operation and management
Interpretation of equivalent qualifications and relevant experience will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Conflict of Interest
You may already have a museum professional on your governing body, who would be willing and able to take on this role. Before taking this step, you must check that the advisory duties will not conflict with those of the governing body member. If this is the case, you will need to find a second museum professional to act in an advisory role in relation to this Scheme.
Curatorial Adviser input towards Accreditation application and Monitoring reports
You must seek your Curatorial Advisers advice when preparing your Accreditation application. Your Curatorial Adviser will also be required to counter sign your application and continually to contribute to the monitoring of your Accredited or Registered status.
