What is the Accreditation Scheme?
Accreditation is a voluntary, quality assurance scheme for museums across the United Kingdom. The scheme is operated by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), and Museums Galleries Scotland is responsible for the administration of it in Scotland. To qualify, museums must meet clear basic requirements on how they care for and document their collections, how they are governed and managed, and on the information and services they offer to their users. All associate or full Museums Galleries Scotland members receive advice and assistance before, during and after the application process, free of charge. The Scheme existed before 2005 under the name of ‘The Museum Registration Scheme’ and over 290 museums in Scotland are currently registered under Phase 2 of this scheme. A new developed version of the scheme was launched on 17th November 2004 by the MLA and is called the Accreditation Scheme.
Accreditation documents are available on the MLA website -
