Collections Care and Conservation Definitions

Collections Care:
caring for the collections by appropriate management and procedures aimed at preservation of collections that apply across all of a museum's activities - from service-wide strategies such as emergency plans and assessment of conservation needs to tasks such as handling, packing, mounting displays and cleaning the museum.

Preventive conservation:
selecting and managing the premises, facilities and environment to achieve optimum conditions, including environmental monitoring and control, storage and display provision.

Remedial conservation:
correcting damage and stabilising condition through interventive action / treatment work on objects in the collection.
