Safeguarding Collections Knowledge: Succession Planning

It is essential that museums consistently employ procedures to retain collections information and subject knowledge held by staff and volunteers intending to move on or retire. Valuable resources can otherwise be forgotten or become difficult to access, leading to a decline in collection use.

Museums Association Scheme for Retired Curators
SMC is pleased to support the MA on a pilot scheme backed by the Monument Trust to fund a number of Fellowships of six to 12 months duration, allowing retired curators to return to their museum to pass on specialist knowledge to their successors.

It is envisaged that there will be 12 Fellowships in all over three years, worth �153,000 in total.
The first round of applications is now closed but a further round will follow in 2008. See the Museums Association web page for details:
