Royal Observatory Edinburgh Pilot CPD Programme

On September 7, 2004, the Royal Observatory Edinburgh (ROE) hosted a seminar to introduce members to the idea of museums as providers of, or hosts for, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers. Supported by SMC and led by the ROE Visitor Centre Manager, Dan Hillier, participants learnt about the ROEs experience of piloting a CPD programme for primary science teachers. Two of the programmes CPD events, accompanied by public astronomical events, took place at host museums. Increased visitor numbers was one immediate benefit for the host museums. Myra Pearson, from the General Teaching Council for Scotland (www.gtcs.org.uk), gave encouragement to museums as potential CPD providers, acknowledging the fact that museums offer specialist insights which teachers need. Meanwhile, the ROEs CPD programme continues. If youd like your museum to play host to an ROE CPD event for science teachers in your region, or to discuss the valuable learnings that emerged from the pilot project, contact Dan Hillier, ROE Visitor Centre Manager.
