To demonstrate how Inspiring Learning for All can transform the learning opportunities museums provide, SMC ran a pilot programme, led by Inspiring Learning for All experts Anne Murch and Gaby Porter, and supported throughout by SMC. The pilot began in October 2004. Two development days are bookending the programme and will provide a foundation for networking and peer support as well as sessions designed to meet the needs of the individual organisations.

Our selection process took account of the guidelines we proposed for the applications and of the strict criteria we designed to enable us to include a representative cross-section of Scotlands museums.
The criteria were organisation size, resources, geographical location, stated goals, focus areas, partnerships, alliances, progress to date and catalysts for change.

All applications indicated support from senior staff, key to encouraging an organisation-wide focus on learning and all applications made a commitment to contributing to the ILfA Champions Network, which will be essential for sustaining learning benefits from the pilot and subsequent access and learning advances throughout the museum sector.
Those selected attended the first of two development days. The day provided plenty of opportunity to focus on the issues faced by the working teams when implementing the framework within their organisations and opportunities to share good practice and skills.
The organisations which were successful in applying for the pilot will be given support and guidance during the pilot programme and will contribute to the sharing of case studies and good practice in the future.
