Constitutions

An important first step for any group setting up a new museum is the formation of a suitable constitution. SMC cannot offer legal advice on constitutional matters but we do offer model constitutions and written guidance for anybody who is considering setting up a new museum organisation.

The model constitutions produced by SMC meet the requirements of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council�s (MLA) Accreditation scheme for museums. They have also been approved as appropriate for organisations seeking charitable status from the Inland Revenue. We would recommend that whatever model you choose to adopt you still seek the final opinion of a lawyer.
