Museums may be primarily about collections, but in the independent museums sector they must also operate as businesses. In order to effectively safeguard and make available their collections to the public, they must be soundly managed, plan for change and development, attract and deploy necessary resources, and market their �product� in an increasingly competitive tourism market.
In order to help museums rise to this challenge SMC commissioned the creation of the Business Development Resource. This is a comprehensive listing of organisations that provide services or web based information pertinent especially to independent museums, but useful for anyone involved in developing museums. Between them the organisations listed provide assistance with anything from project development, to financial management, to trading activities.
