Museums and galleries are a vital part of Scotlands tourism product, and therefore key players in Scotlands most important industry.
In March 2005, we held the conference, Museums, Galleries and Tourism: Realising the Potential in partnership with VisitScotland and Scottish Enterprise. It offered museums, galleries and partner organisations the chance to focus on the role they play in tourism, allowing delegates to explore both the opportunities and challenges facing museums and tourism.

In May, we launched the independent report, Realising the True Impact of Museums and Galleries in Scottish Tourism. It highlighted that more people visit museums and galleries than any other type of visitor attraction in Scotland, and that museums and galleries consistently appear among the top three activities undertaken by tourists. We are now building on this foundation, working closely with VisitScotland, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise to develop the way forward for museums, galleries and tourism.
