Expanding Engagement
2005 commemorated 60 years since the end of the Second World War. Throughout the UK, a large number of innovative events, exhibitions and educational projects under the title of 'Their Past Your Future', helped further a greater understanding of the effect of war by bringing together young people, veterans and wider communities. Read more about the evaluation of Their Past Your Future Scotland Phase 1.
The initiative was considered so successful that the Big Lottery Fund has made more money available to fund similar projects. Museums Galleries Scotland has been awarded £0.5m over the course of two and a half years (until March 2010) to deliver Their Past Your Future Phase 2 in Scotland.

Their Past Your Future Scotland Phase 2 - Project Overview
Their Past Your Future Scotland Phase 2 will focus on the Second World War and conflicts since, enabling generations within communities to discover personal stories which have affected or involved their local area. Essentially:
This is a fantastic opportunity to ensure that the memories and first-hand knowledge of war is never forgotten and will lead to a greater understanding for all generations of the impact of conflict in the local area.
Museums Galleries Scotland full member museums and galleries will be eligible to apply for funding and will lead on all project activity. Staff and volunteers may have an active role in collecting oral histories from veterans in collaboration with young people, for which training opportunities will be offered. Alternatively, local partnerships may wish to hire the services of an Oral History Facilitator to carry out the project although developing skills in this area could prove very useful for future projects.
Local museums and galleries will be expected to work closely with libraries, archives and other local cultural and community organisations. Partner organisations will support the delivery of the project activity and facilitate inter-generational work, as well as providing access to source materials for information and use on the new online learning TPYF website.
Spending is not restricted to any financial year, however, final claim for payment will be 30 November 2009.
Although match-funding is not required for Their Past Your Future, a local and regional commitment to, and support for, project activities will be advantageous.
Depending on interest / uptake, there may be a further round of funding available at a later date.
