Introduction to museum ethics

This day aims to identify key ethical issues in the changing landscapes of museums today and to introduce you to elements of the Museum Association’s Code of Ethics.  It will also provide you with an opportunity to work through relevant case studies and discuss ethical issues that arise in your everyday work.

Course objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• provide participants with practice in analyzing the ethical dimensions of museum practices and purposes with reference to simple case studies
• provide an open forum in which participants can discuss ethical issues in their everyday work
• clarify what constitutes ethical issues in contrast to legal issues and questions of personal conviction
• place museum ethics within the context of professional recognition and responsibility in the UK.
