Training programme

SMC's training programme covers a wide variety of topics from the care of collections to interpretation and learning and access. Attendance on these courses also offers excellent networking opportunities for museum staff and volunteers.


The current programme includes the following courses:

03/10/07, Edinburgh:  Introduction to museum ethics
Key ethical issues in the changing landscapes of museums today and an introduction to elements of the Museum Association�s Code of Ethics.

17/10/07, Stirling:  Developing and evaluating online learning resources
Practical training on developing e-learning resources; the use of online collections; how to evaluate learning resources; and basic information on developing websites.

15/11/07, Edinburgh:  Care of textiles
Guidance on identifying care needs, handling and moving, storage, support, protection and the display of various textiles.

21/11/07, Glasgow: MDA Documentation for Accreditation
A comprehensive and practical guide to mastering the documentation elements of the Museum Accreditation Scheme.

28/11/07, Edinburgh: MDA Documentation procedural manual workshop 
An opportunity to begin building an outline Procedural Manual that will support your museum's documentation system and help you meet the criteria for Accreditation.

30/01/08, Glasgow: MDA Documentation planning workshop
This is a practical course giving participants the opportunity to begin work on a documentation plan for their own organisation, with guidance from the trainer.

13/02/08, Stirling:  Introduction to environmental monitoring
A basic introduction to environmental monitoring: the reasons for undertaking monitoring; what factors should be monitored; the variety of equipment available; and how to analyse and make use of the data gathered.

21/02/08, Glasgow:  Introduction to oral history
A practical introduction to oral history interviewing: how to get started; who to interview; approaches to questioning; interview dos and don�ts; what to do after the interview e.g. transcription, copyright and archiving; and evaluation.

07/03/08, Edinburgh:  Working with people with special educational needs
Become more inclusive to people with learning and physical disabilities: planning for access; and the design of inclusive activities.

14/03/08, Perth:  Developing and evaluating learning activities
Inspiring ways to incorporate learning into museum programmes: teaching techniques; case studies; and advice on who is available to help.
 
18/03/08, Edinburgh: Writing a collections care action plan
The development and implication of a Collection Care Plan : what the organisation aims to achieve in terms of collection care; how it intends to achieve this; and how time and other resources need to be allocated.
