Workforce Development

Museums aspire to deliver world class services, successfully working in partnership, make collections fully accessible, engage with their communities and educate and inspire not only their visitors but also their staff, colunteers and stakeholders.  The only way to achieve this vision is through the people who work and volunteer in their thousands across Scotland.

Approximately 11,000 people work within the museum sector in Scotland, with around half of those engaged on a voluntary basis.  This workforce needs continual investment and support to develop the necessary skills, knowledge, attitude and behaviour needed to deliver first class services.

This national strategy has been developed in consultation with the sector and identifies areas for immediate development.  The strategy includes a 3-year action plan to guide Museums Galleries Scotland, key partner organisations and Scotland’s museums and galleries towards achieving a diverse, highly-skilled, well-managed, fit-for-purpose workforce.
