What do Scottish museum volunteers do?
As part of Volunteers Week 2002 SMC did some research into the type of work that museum volunteers do. The organisations involved were:
The Smith Museum and Art Gallery, Stirling
Dollar Museum (completely volunteer run)
Newhaven Heritage Museum, Edinburgh
Edinburgh City Council
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society, Boness
Although the findings were taken from just five sites, they indicate the huge range of activities in which museum volunteers are engaged. These include:
-
Management duties
-
Curatorial work
-
Fundraising
-
Organising and attending events
-
Researching and sourcing exhibition material
-
Providing guided tours
-
Interpretation work
-
Non-specialist conservation work
-
Marketing
-
DIY
-
Retail management
-
Front of house duties
-
Creating and maintaining community links
-
Evaluation of visitor surveys
-
Library/archive work
-
Accountancy work
