Volunteer Development

The National Audit of Scottish museums carried out by SMC revealed that 53% of all museum staff are volunteers. This demonstrates the important contribution that volunteers make to the running of Scottish museums.

An internal working group (now disbanded) was set up between 2002 – 2003 to consider ways in which SMC might support volunteers and volunteer managers. The following mission statement and aims were developed:

Volunteer Development Working Group Mission Statement:

The Scottish Museums Council works to support and develop the role of volunteering within Scottish museums and galleries, using SMC resources and staff expertise.

Aims:

To promote the vital contribution that volunteers make to museum life
To encourage equal access to training and development opportunities
To enable museums to successfully recruit and retain a wide range of volunteers
To enable museums to realise their potential through effective volunteer management
To encourage museums to make effective use of resources
