SMC Staff Vacancy: Regional Development Challenge Fund Scheme Manager

�24,333 - �27,729 per annum (pro rata) Part time post, 2 days per week.
Fixed term to 31 March 2008
The RDCF has provided funding for 10 projects covering the whole of Scotland.
The overall aim is to develop the capacity and sustainability of the museum sector.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and organised person with excellent communication skills to ensure the continued management of the scheme by providing strategic support to the projects and ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation. The successful candidate will have experience of both managing and evaluating projects and a good knowledge and understanding of the issues facing Scottish local authorities.

SMC / MA New Post: SMC / MA Development Officer

�25,000. Two-year contract
An exciting opportunity to develop and strengthen museums in Scotland. The post holder will be responsible for taking forward a number of initiatives in areas where the objectives of SMC and the MA overlap, particularly related to collections development and workforce development, and will also contribute to developing a better understanding in both organisations of key issues and developments in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Candidates should have experience of working with museums in Scotland and have excellent communication skills, including the ability to broker relationships between organisations, and will have an understanding of key issues for museums in Scotland and the UK and an interest in workforce development and collections. The successful candidate will be home-based but should have easy access to Edinburgh and will be required to travel throughout Scotland and to London.

Creative & Cultural Skills: Industry Skills Director - Cultural Heritage

Creative & Cultural Skills is the Sector Skills Council for advertising, craft, cultural heritage, design, music and the arts. The Council is looking for a creative and energetic person to lead Cultural Heritage employer and industry engagement, ensuring the sector influences and participates in a range of key projects. Applicants must have at least two years senior management experience and demonstrate a record of initiating and leading projects and partnerships. A thorough knowledge of the Cultural Heritage sector and an understanding of the UK�s education and skills agenda are also essential.

GEM / SMC Grass Roots Learning Development Officer Appointed

Calum Price has been appointed to replace Susan Galloway as Group for Education in Museums / SMC Learning Development Officer.
Calum returned to Scotland from teaching in Taiwan to take up the post He formerly held positions in museums education with the National Museums of Scotland and with Historic Scotland.

Lottery Awards

Recent Heritage Lottery Fund awards include:

  •  �11,600 to the Mallaig Heritage Centre to develop video displays which will offer an enhanced learning and interpretation experience for visitors.
  •  �26,800 to the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses to improve conservation and develop interpretation at the museum.
  •  �40,000 to the Scottish Seabird Centre towards a natural heritage education project for communities on the Firth of Forth.
  •  �50,000 to East Lothian Council towards Phase 2 of the Prestongrange Community Archaeology Project.
  •  �50,000 to Westray Heritage Trust towards building an annex on to the Westray Heritage Centre to provide space for increased educational activity, annual exhibitions and better access to the collections.
  •  �4.78 million for renovation at Summerlee Heritage Park.


Scottish Community Foundation Funds

Small community-based organisations with a project idea that will be of benefit to their local community can apply to the Scottish Community Foundation for funding of up to �5,000. To be eligible, groups must have an annual income of less than �250,000 and the grant must be spent within 12 months. Applications can be made at any time.

Microsoft Community Learning Awards


These awards aim to support community groups and charities across the UK in tackling digital exclusion by providing opportunities for disadvantaged young people and adults to learn about information technology through community-based technology and learning centres.
